Dodge Brief History

The Dodge or formally the the Dodge Division of Chrysler Corporation, is an American brand of automobiles, minivans and other sport utility vehicles which is manufactured by the FCA US LLC. The company is based on Auburn Hills, Michigan. Nowadays, Dodge vehicles are considered low-price badge variants of the Chrysler-badged vehicles although Dodge is considered mid-priced brand above Plymouth.

 

Dodge brothers

 

The company was founded by Horace Elgin Dodge and John Francis Dodge who are brothers in 1900 and founded as the Dodge Brothers Company. The company started life as a supplier of automobiles’ parts and assemblies for Detroit-based automakers and finally began manufacturing automobiles itself in 1915, predating the founding of the Chrysler Corporation. Suddenly, in 1920, the two brothers died and the company was then sold to Dillon, Read & Co. in 1925 and later to the Chrysler Corporation in 1928. Through the 70’s, the company focuses to produce trucks and full-sized passenger cars which make some inroads into the compact car market during these years. Due to the oil crisis in 1973, the Chrysler develops the K platform of compact midsize cars in the 1980’s.

The brand has withstood multiple ownership changes at Chrysler 1998-2009, its short-time merger with Daimler-Benz AG from 1998-2007, its sale to the Cerberus Capital Management, its bailout to the United States government in 2009 and its bankruptcy and acquisition by the Fiat company.
