Bentley Brief History

Bentley Motors Limited is a British luxury automobile manufacturer which is wholly owned by the German company Volkswagen AG. It focuses on the products’ design, engineering, manufacture and distribution. Bentley is headquartered in Crewe, England and was founded by W. O. Bentley on 18 January 1919 which then was acquired by Rolls-Royce in 1931.


The Bentley company is the direct successor of Rolls-Royce Motors, which then purchased by the German company Volkswagen AG in 1998. The purchase included the vehicles designs, model nameplates, facilities, the Spirit of Ecstasy and Rolls-Royce grille shape trademarks. But the purchase did not include in terms of using the Rolls-Royce name or logo.

Bentley cars are sold worldwide via franchised dealers and in November 2012, China was the largest individual market for the luxury automobiles. Most of the cars are assembled in Crewe and the other few number are assembled Transparent Factory in Dresden, Germany. The Continental model line’s automobile bodies are produced in Zwickau, Germany. Unexpectedly, Bentley cars are largely hand-built.

The car manufacture was noted to be the winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1924, 1927, 1928, 1929 and 2003. The company’s current production models are Continental Flying Spur, Continental GT and and Mulsanne. Notable former production models include the 4½ Liter, Speed Six, R Type Continental, Turbo R and Arnage.
